The late model Ford 3G high output alternator has become a popular upgrade for Early Broncos. These units can be purchased new, or used from salvage yards and online marketplaces such as eBay or the late model Mustang classifieds at The Corral or Stang Net. The 3G is an easy bolt-on installation (some minor modifications to mounting ears or bracketry may be required). And wiring it up is a snap with our printable 3G Install Diagram (click here).

Here's a quick and easy way to adjust your front wheel alignment. Park your Bronco on a flat, level surface, and use the method shown in the diagram below to measure the distance between the tires at the front and at the rear. Adjust your toe-in so that the tires are 1/8" to 1/4" closer in the front than in the rear. CLICK HERE to download the PDF File that fully explains the procedure with clear diagrams.

TILT STEERING COLUMN

If you would like to have a tilt wheel in your early Bronco, here is a clean and easy way to get it.

Get the complete column (auto or stick) with wheel from a pre 1980 F-150. I like to use the 1978 or 1979. Remove the tubes that have the column support brackets spot welded to them. Drill out the spot welds and remove the support brackets from the F-150 and Bronco tubes. Place the F-150 tube in your Bronco.

For column shift automatics move the column up as far as possible without the shift linkage hitting the firewall bracket. You will loose about 1" of steering wheel height. With the stick column you can move it up to the stock Bronco height, if you would like.

Put the Bronco bracket removed earlier, in place on the F-150 column and bolt it down. Make sure that the column is not rotated and adjust the steering wheel height to suit. Mark the bracket location on the column. Remove the column and bracket. Fit the bracket on the column using the marks made earlier and weld. Reinstall the column. Cut a small notch in the steering column bezel to allow the turn signal wires to pass through. Connect the turn signal wires. On later models the socket will plug in to the stock Bronco wiring. If the plugs don't match up, connect the wires as follows:

CIRCUIT EB WIRINGCOLUMN WIRING

Left rear turn signalYellow/black Yelow/black
Right front turn signalWhite/blue White/blue
Right rear turn signal??/green Green
Backup light switchRed/black Red/black

COLUMN SHIFTER SLEEVE REPLACEMENT

When you change from the column shifter to a floor shifter you can also remove the column mechanism.

Before you start you will need to find the sleeve that goes below the early mustang turn signal switch. It looks like the bronco part without the hole for the column shifter. This is a readily available part. Be sure to get the two mounting screws. Then simply remove the steering wheel, turn signal assembly and the column shift parts. Using the two Screws mount the new sleeve to the bottom of the turn signal switch through the holes already in the turn signal switch base. Reassemble leaving out all shifter parts.

SERPENTINE BELT CONVERSION

The donor vehicle will be an 87 Mustang. Take all brackets,  tensioners,  pulleys,  power steering pump and hardware. Your alternator will work by changing the pulley. You will need to replace your water pump and fan with a reverse rotation water pump and fan. Put a 1/4" spacer under the water pump pulley and find a 3 1/2" deep crank pulley. If you run A/C you will need to modify the top radiator hose.

INTERMITTENT WIPERS

Take the intermittent wiper box located under the dash and intermittent wiper switch from the dash of a 79 or earlier F series Ford truck. Modify the wiper switch by cutting off 1/4" from the end of the wiper switch shaft. Remove the wiper switch from your Bronco. Install the modified F series wiper switch. Mount F-series intermittent box under your dash (the hole is already there). Connect wiring plugs and wipe away.

POWER STEERING CONVERSION

4X4 F-150 power steering box.
The 1979 F-150 4X4 power steering box (at right) is about the same length as the Early Bronco power steering box. The EB pitman arm will fit. The F-150 box bolts to the outside of the frame. The bore is a litle larger than the EB box. Two of the three mounting holes will need to be moved to match the EB frame holes. The worm gear/rack will need to be replaced with the worm gear/rack from a 4X2 power steering box like the one below to make the 4X4 box steer correctly for the EB.

4X2 F-150 power steering box.
At left is a 1981 4X2 F-150 power steering box. Notice that both boxes have the same spool valve housing with four bolts holding it onto the steering box. We will use the 4X2 spool valve/housing, worm gear and piston/rack in the 4X4 box in order to change the steering direction.
